​Young Artists & Authors Showcase (YAAS) 
2025 Theme: “Friendship: The Heartbeat of Global Peace.”

*Sister Cities Newport News (SCNN) is sponsoring our local Young Artist and Authors Showcase (YAAS) competition in conjunction with the Sister Cities International (SCI) competition. This annual contest encourages youth worldwide to express the mission of Sister Cities through original art, literature, photography, and music. Submissions are centered around an annual theme. This year's theme is, “Friendship: The Heartbeat of Global Peace.” . Submissions will be judged based on originality, composition, & theme interpretation.
Local Awards
     $50 for the top submission in 6 categories as judged by SCNN
National Awards
Newport News' local winners, and up to 4 honorable mentions in each category,
will be entered into SCI's YAAS and become eligible for the following additional awards: 
Each Category’s Grand Prize Winner will receive $1,000
Each category’s 2nd Place Winner will receive $250
Each category’s 3rd Place Winner will receive $100
GENERAL YAAS RULES
  • Artist must be between the ages of 13-18 as of April 1, 2025
  • Artist must be a resident of Newport News or an international partners city (Neyagawa, Japan; Taizhou, China; Greifswald, Germany; ZiYang, China or Saint Nazaire, France).
  • 2025 theme for all categories is ““Friendship: The Heartbeat of Global Peace.” Judges will evaluate submissions based on theme interpretation, originality, and creativity.
  • Artists may submit their work in multiple showcases (1 submission per category ). ​

Local Artist Awarded $1,000 Grand Prize in 2021 Sister Cities International Art Contest!

PictureThe original art of 13-year-old Hannah Hong was selected as the "Grand Prize" winner of the 2021 Young Artists and Authors Showcase (YAAS) by Sister Cities International. Hannah’s work, "Draw Together", is a detailed pen and ink that convincingly conveyed the 2021 theme of “United In Hope”. Congratulations Hannah!
