Carrigaline, County Cork, Ireland

Newport News Welcomes a new "Sister  City"

Why Carrigaline?

In the fall of 2021, The Sister Cities of Newport News Board of Directors approved the first step on the road to "Sister City" partnership by making the town of Carrigaline, County Cork, Ireland a "Friendship City". Over the course of the next 18 months, virtual and in-person exchanges were conducted to connect our communities and learn about our shared heritage.

One of the earliest European settlers in present-day Newport News was Daniel Gookin of Carrigaline. In 1621, Gookin, having sold nearly all his worldly treasures in order to fund the transatlantic crossing, arrived on shores of the peninsula on the "Flying Heart". Along with his associate David Newce, they established Marie's Mount on the land now currently occupied the Newport News Marine Terminal. Unlike other homesteads in the area, Marie's Mount survived a significant Indian attack in 1622 due to its fortifications.

On March 15, 2023 the sister city partnership became official with the signing of the "Twinning Agreement" in County Cork by Newport News Councilwoman Dr. Patricia P Woodbury and County Cork's Chief Executive Officer, Tim Lucey and then Chair of the Carrigaline Municipal District Cllr. Ben Dalton O'Sullivan. The agreement was further ratified in Newport News on June 16, 2023 upon the first official visit to Newport News by members of the Carrigaline Municipal District and twinning association.

Carrigaline has an established "Twinning Committee" which, like SCNN, manages their international partnerships. Both organizations build connections between the cities and identify areas where the  "Sister City" partnership can be of mutual benefit. Cultural programs (music, art, etc) as well as youth programs are possible.
