Newport News is located at the mouth of Virginia's James River. The James is most notably known as the home of Jamestown, the nation's first permanent English settlement formed upstream from Newport News Point in 1607.

Four rivers actually converge off Newport News Point — the James, Nansemond, Elizabeth and Lafayette — creating the world's greatest natural harbor – the port of Hampton Roads. The port of Hampton Roads is home to shipbuilding, shipping, commercial fishing, and recreational water sports of all kinds. Hampton Roads also serves as home to the largest military installation in the world – the Navy's North Atlantic fleet.

While long known as one the world's major shipbuilding centers, Newport News is quickly expanding its global reach. Newport News' high-tech corporate citizens include the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility, Symantec, Canon Virginia, and MCI. International firms including Liebherr (Switzerland), Canon (Japan), Triton Tool & Die (Canada), Solo (Germany), and Continental Coal and Shipping (France) maintain operations in Newport News.
